History of The Jersey Shore Saxophone Quintet
Tom Makoviecki, contractor, and baritone saxophonist for the quintet, has enjoyed listening to, and playing in saxophone quartets ever since his college years. When he graduated college and played in numerous big bands, he felt that five horns instead of four make for a bigger, fatter sound. The big bands would use two altos, two tenors and a baritone saxophone. This is the same lineup used by The Jersey Shore Saxophone Quintet, but they also use soprano saxophone for some arrangements.
The playing experience of the members of The Jersey Shore Saxophone Quintet ranges from The New Jersey Symphony and Broadway shows to such recording acts as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, B.B. King, Manhatten Transfer, Julian Lennon, and even The Bob Hope Show.
The quintet's main goal is to promote live music through the use of a traditional saxophone section. The Jersey Shore Saxophone Quintet brings an ecletic and broad spectrum of music to their performances. Makoviecki often will say, "We play everything from Johan Bach to James Brown."
